Courtroom Tips

At the Katy, Texas Law Office of Kathy Black, we want you to make the best impression possible,
when you appear before the judge in family court. To help you, we have compiled a list of rules for
proper dress and courtroom etiquette. Please read the information below carefully, before your court appearance.

Courtroom Dress Code

Looking your best for your day in court is extremely important and that means abiding by a strict dress code. Remember, you will only have one chance to make a positive impression on the judge. A person who goes to court, wearing shorts and sandals will not get the same treatment as a person dressed in
a suit or other conservative attire. Casual dress does not show respect for the court and, in fact, looks
as though you have no interest in your appearance. For your family's sake, choose clothing that is modest, dignified and in good taste.

Proper courtroom dress codes for men and women are as follows:

For Men A dark suit is preferred. If a suit is not available, wear slacks, a white shirt and tie, at a minimum. No hats or sunglasses Dress shoes. Never wear sneakers in a courtroom. Neat, well-groomed hair. If you have long hair, make sure you tie it back. No strong cologne Jewelry: one ring (wedding band) and a watch, maximum.

For Women A nice dress, business suit or blouse and a skirt that is no more than two inches above the knee. Nylons or panty hose Dress shoes or heels Neatly groomed hair Jewelry: A ring, earrings and a watch. Nothing else. No strong perfume Nail polish: No brightly colored nails. Do not wear any polish beyond a clear coat or French manicure.

Courtroom Etiquette

When sitting in family law court, do not rest your elbows on the tables at any time. Sit up straight and look attentive at all times. Slouching says that you do not care about your case. Pretend you are on TV, with the whole world watching you and you have to look your best. Always remember to turn your cell phone off or to vibrate before you enter the courtroom.

Language Usage

In the courtroom, always speak English as correctly as you are able. Do not use slang or expletives.

Additional Good Manners

• Be punctual. Better yet, be early.
• Do not talk during the court proceedings.
• Do not chew gum.
• Turn your cell phone to off or vibrate and do not use it even for texting.
• Do not bring books or magazines to read.
• Remain in attendance until excused. Both parties and counsel must remain in attendance during jury deliberations.
• Address everyone in court, including lawyers, witnesses and court personnel only by their titles and surnames.
• When the court requests items for the judge's examination, hand the items to the clerk of the court,
  not to the judge or the court reporter.
• Stand when the judge or jury enters or leaves the courtroom.
• Do not make any side remarks.
• If you have a cell phone with you, turn it off.
